Elective Studies
Information for Year 2 Elective Filming
As part of the elective planning and in helping the students choose what elective they would like to study, I have included the project brief in the Learner’s Manual and you should receive an SD Card with examples of past filming, so when you show the films to the Year 2 students, start with:
- Kilowhat pilot
- Dan the Man
- Goodbye Earth
- I Want To Get Out Of This Place
- Selected 2017 Shorts
Some information that I give students when showing the films is:
- Kilowhat was filmed in 2009, which you can see from the dated clothes and hair. The guy with the curly hair went on to become a presenter on Channel V and is now on Fox FM on Saturday nights. His name is Marty Smiley.
- Dan the Man was filmed in 2012, and the student director is now studying to become a drama teacher at Deakin, the presenter Dan is doing lots of professional acting and work and was a co lead in Nowhere Boys on ABC3.
- Goodbye Earth is a long film. It should have been 5-7 minutes, but d’Artagnan, the director, wanted to keep going. He spent 53 hours editing this film. There is a short version but we have been unable to locate it, so feel free to just watch bits. It was filmed in Macclesfield and the cave scenes were filmed in the studio using green screen.
- I Want To Get Out Of This Place was again filmed in another student’s place in Macclesfield. This is Peta, who works at the theatre. She found challenges in filming at night time. We all hate the ‘cigarette’ at the end, but was one of those things that was forgotten in pre planning.
- The selected shorts are last year’s work
We hope the students like them and are inspired seeing other student’s work.
Year 2 students are not allowed to act in the film, except for the presenter. So in Goodbye Earth, the presenter is the newsreader, the actors are either Year 1 students, or outside actors who audition.

Key Notes About Year 2 Assessments
- Year 2 students must find a different script for both self tapes, their Participate in negotiations screen test, and special skills script. This gives them a range of scripts as well as challenges them to branch out. For graduation, they can then choose any of their best monologues/duologues. If they were to do one script for all of these, they would not be extending themselves. No excuses as to why they can’t find more scripts to do.
- Headshots from the excursion will be posted on Facebook as they are too large to email as a file. Monitor for any comments as there are NOT to be any disparaging comments on any media posts.
- Student headshots on your CV will be placed by Nikki to help achieve the most professional look. If students have not sent their CV in, they cannot pass UOC VU21840 Expand skills for auditions (use promotional materials at screen tests/auditions). A CV must be given to the industry guest at the Participate in negotiations screen test, so if students have not emailed their CV, they are jeopardising their chances of passing.
